John “Johnny” William Rice Sr., born October 6th, 1949, passed away surrounded by family on July 20th, 2021. He was preceded in death by his father James “Jack” William Rice, mother Poppie Eloise “Lois” Rice, and his son Jimmie Derrick Rice.
Johnny was the oldest sibling of a family a five and devoted a majority of his life to family businesses. He worked for Rice Seafood, captained the Miss Vicki as a commercial fisherman, helped lay the foundation and built ships at Master Boat Builders, and maintained vessels for Masco Operators. He took great pride in his work and the businesses owned by the Rice family.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 48 years, Kanda Rice as well as his sons John William Rice Jr. and James Eric Rice Sr. His surviving beloved grandchildren are Eric Rice Jr., Allison Rice, Jackson Rice, Grant Rice, Ella Rice, Ireland Rice, Carson Rice, Stella Rice, and Harper Rice. Johnny is also survived by his brothers Richard (Debra) Rice, Michael (Debbie) Rice, David (Julie) Rice, and his sister Vicki Rice as well as a host of nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be held at the Bayou La Batre Kenmar Family Funeral Home chapel (14250 South Wintzell Avenue) on Thursday, July 22, 2021. Family visitation will be 4pm until 5pm and then visitation will be open to friends from 5pm until 7pm. Funeral Services at the Kenmar chapel followed by burial at Oddfellows Cemetery in Bayou La Batre will take place on Friday, July 23, 2021 with services beginning at 10am.
