Frances Isabel (Gartland) Guempel passed away at age 84 on October 8, 2020 surrounded by her family after battling stage 4 colon cancer.
Fran was born in Rochester, NY September 19, 1936. Fran went to John Marshall High School, attended the University of Rochester, was a practicing Catholic, a flight attendant for TWA until getting married, and lived all over the country. Fran retired with her husband to Dauphin Island, AL in 1986.
Fran was an artist, active in the local theatre, avid bridge player, enjoyed learning to play golf in retirement, and loved taking cruises with her family and friends. She was glamorous and elegant while down to earth and never met a stranger.
Fran was the coolest person ever- she was tech savvy, active on social media, supported the causes she cared about, considered herself a foodie, liked making new recipes, wore clown noses, and made turtles everywhere she went. She appreciated a cold Miller Lite, oysters, and the occasional dirty martini with blue cheese stuffed olives or glass of champagne. Fran was kind, forgiving, generous, fun and filled with joie de vivre. She subscribed to the practice of shenanigans. She loved theme parties, Halloween, playing trivia, cards, and board games, reading books, and puzzles. More than anything, though, Fran loved people.
Predeceased by her parents, Edward A. and Vida (Pugsley) Gartland, brother, Edward E. Gartland, and daughter, Donna Guempel. Survived by her husband of 62 years, Donald Guempel; daughter, Lori Guempel Moody; and grandchildren, Madeleine and Anthony “AJ” Moody. Also survived by many loving family members (brothers and sisters in law, cousin, nieces, and nephews).
A celebration of life will be held locally on November 1st. For more information, contact Lori Moody at firstname.lastname@example.org.
